Where AI Actually Helps in Your Job Search (and Where It Doesn’t)

Where AI Actually Helps in Your Job Search (and Where It Doesn’t)

If you’ve spent five minutes on LinkedIn or TikTok recently, you’ve probably seen advice like:

  • “Just use ChatGPT to write your CV.”
  • “Automate your job search with AI.”
  • “Let AI answer your interview questions.”

It sounds tempting—especially if the job hunt already feels overwhelming.

And to be fair, some of it’s not completely wrong.

But here’s the reality:

Most AI advice for job seekers is vague at best, and totally unhelpful at worst.

Because most people are using AI the wrong way.

And most AI tools? They’re not trained to help you—they're just trained to sound like they are.

The problem with how most AI is trained

Let’s quickly talk about how general-purpose AI tools (like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot) actually work—because this is where most of the confusion starts.

These models are trained on massive amounts of publicly available content from across the internet:

  • Articles
  • Blog posts
  • Templates
  • Reddit threads
  • Wikipedia
  • Social media

So when you ask them for CV feedback, or to write a cover letter, or tell you why you’re not getting interviews—they’re not pulling from real hiring experience.

They’re pulling from scraped content. Content that might be outdated, made up, or written by someone who’s never hired anyone in their life.

That’s why you get advice like:

  • “Add a personal objective statement”
  • “Include hobbies and your full address”
  • “Use more keywords for ATS”
  • “You need an 85% ATS score to get past the robots”

It’s confidently presented nonsense.

The issue isn’t that AI is broken. It’s that most of the information it’s trained on... is.

So, can AI actually help you get hired?

Yes—but only when you use it properly.

Where AI Is Not Helpful

1. Writing your CV from scratch

AI tools can create a professional-sounding CV fast. The problem?

It sounds like every other AI-written CV:

Vague, robotic, and completely lacking in any real insight or impact.

You get lines like:

  • “Results-driven professional with a passion for excellence.”
  • “Strong team player with experience in cross-functional collaboration.”

It’s all filler. No substance.

You still have to feed it the right information—and most people don’t know what that is.

2. Mass applying to jobs with AI-generated cover letters

Yes, AI can generate 50 cover letters in a few minutes.
But all you’re doing is sending a slightly reworded version of the same message to dozens of companies. Hiring managers spot it instantly—and ignore it just as fast.

If you’re using AI to apply to 100 jobs a week, your problem isn’t efficiency.
It’s that you’re not standing out to anyone.

3. Getting feedback on your CV from ChatGPT

This is where it gets risky.

You paste your CV into ChatGPT and ask for feedback. It gives you a list of tips. Some sound reasonable. Others are way off. But you don’t know which is which.

Here’s the truth:
ChatGPT has never hired anyone. It’s never skimmed 200 CVs in one afternoon. It doesn’t know what gets ignored and what gets interviews.

It’s just pulling from what it’s seen online—which might be the same bad advice that hasn’t worked for years.

Where AI Is Actually Useful

1. Practising interview questions

This is one of the smartest uses of AI.
You can use ChatGPT to role-play interviews with you, push you with follow-up questions, or help you refine your STAR stories.

It won’t replace real-life coaching, but it’s a brilliant tool to get comfortable answering tough questions before the real thing.

2. Researching companies

Use AI to summarise what a company does, recent news, their mission, Glassdoor reviews, or interview trends.

This kind of prep gives you the context you need to tailor your answers and show that you actually care about the role.

3. Brainstorming STAR examples

If you’ve been in your current job for years, it can be hard to remember achievements or examples that show your skills.

Try using AI to prompt you:

“Give me examples of conflict resolution in a retail role.”
“Help me structure a STAR story around leading a project.”

It’ll jog your memory and help you structure stronger responses.

4. Getting feedback from AI that’s actually trained to help

This is where I’ll plug what I built—because it’s the gap I saw no one else filling.

I created AI CV Reviewer because jobseekers were pasting their CVs into ChatGPT and getting feedback that sounded nice… but wasn’t helping.

So I trained a custom AI using my own hiring experience—20 years of reviewing CVs.

It follows strict, recruiter-led rules.
It doesn’t use fake ATS scores.
It doesn’t praise generic fluff.
It gives you practical, honest, no-nonsense feedback—including rewritten sections, formatting tips, and job role suggestions.

You upload your CV. It reviews it like I would.

AI won’t land you a job.
But it can help you apply faster, prepare better, and fix the things that are holding you back—if you use the right tools in the right places.

The problem isn’t that AI is bad.
It’s that most of what it’s trained on is.

So stop relying on generic tools that were never built for you.
Use AI where it adds real value—and skip the rest.
